Decongestants temporarily open your sinuses, but they do it by drying the phlegm which makes it thicker. That is why you get the "rebound effect" where you feel worse after you stop them. You trade short term relief- and I don't discount it- for a worse long term reaction. What you ultimately need to do is to thin the mucus and reduce the inflammatory swelling. The thin mucus fights infection and lubricates the passages whereas cooked down phlegm blocks things up. Seriously, try a neti pot or at least squirt saline solution up your nose. I like to add a little xylitol and goldenseal to the sea salt, which brings the herbs where they need to be and keeps bacteria from adhering to your nasal passages. Also look at turmeric for inflammation, and check your diet for potential allergens like dairy or gluten.

Adding an oral irrigator to your day-to-day brushing and flossing regimen will help you maintain your mouth thoroughly clean and your gums healthy. Oral irrigators perform by shooting a targeted stream of water in between your teeth and along your gums, successfully removing trapped debris, bacteria, and plaque below the gum line.
